Cyproheptadine could be advantageous in cats as an appetite stimulant. It possibly could be of assistance in the therapy of feline asthma or pruritus in felines, but clinical effectiveness is negligible for these symptoms.
Cyproheptadine is an antihistamine but its effectiveness is debatable for this indication in canines. The medication could be advantageous as adjunctive treatment for Cushing’s syndrome perhaps as result of its anti-serotonin activity, however one study exhibited effectiveness in less than 10% of canines treated for pituitary dependent hyperadrenocorticism.
Cyproheptadine could be appropriate as adjunctive treatment in canines or felines with serotonin syndrome or to lessen dysphoria (vocalization, disorientation) correlated with baclofen, carisoprodol, SSRI, or ephedra/ma huang toxicosis.
